17march Prop Workshop at 60Million Postcards

hello all

I’m Fred, one of the artist in OutsideIN Collective and this is the first entry of weekly updates on the developement of Project ‘Shop’.

So this week has been very busy and full of ups and downs, just like most week since we began working on this project full-time in January. Its been a week of designing, printing and rain… with some disappointment!

Making ‘Shop’ Happen!

Martin has been hard at work on the phone and email each day contacting various landlords and local officials continuing our ongoing fight to get hold of an empty shop unit, so we can actually do the event in may! It is as ever an up hill struggle… even though there are many empty units around…  we have council support…  everyone is very positive about the idea…  and even with the offer of money and advertising many leads have gone dead… some just couldn’t commit till April and this is too long for us, because we need to have the space so we know what cardboard shelves to make and more importantly to get posters and flyers made to get people to experience ‘Shop’.  It is hard to not let it bring us down… we do what is suggested to us but with each success like getting £250 from the radio there seem to come another closed-door or hurdle.

But we continue to spin many plates of this project in hope. At the moment there are 2 possible shop locations left in Bournemouth and the chance we could do it in Poole, but this week we will push to get a space or start on top-secret plan B. (whatever that will be)

Designing: Many designs are flowing from the groups… ‘Ultra upgrade’ ‘legit-chew’ ‘Placebo’ and many more, and they are all really good and will make engaging talking points… different subjects and themes… but all beautifully design subversion of products with a juicy layer of cultural referencing and humour!

I am really excited to see how people respond to them and what conversation comes, this is my greatest interest and its this that keeps me going!

Printing: As easter break is approaching and we won’t be able to use the studio for a few weeks, so we set the target of printing 250 products this and next week to bring the total number of products for the ‘Shop’ to approximately 1300… that’s quite a big challenge… this week we only managed 100+ products as we wanted to make sure the new designs were as good as they could be and had problem getting silk screen exposed

but NEXT WEEK we will PRINT LIKE MAD to get 300 products printed!

ALSO THIS WEEK

We have been working on product Ad storyboards, talking the film students who are helping us and set the shoot date for next friday… just need to find the actors and get the props made!

We had another fun workshop at Stitch at 60 Million Postcards, its was a good night with great music and lots of cakes… to many cakes and some strange cardboard dressed men!

Ellie continued Fund raising by selling the wonderful Mooshie Taboo T-shirts and bags at STITCH and Cowabunga at The Winchester, we still have many more beautiful designs for you to buy!

Fun at prop workshop!

Thats it for now, check back soon as we will be uploading the BBC radio Solent interview that we bumble our way through. Plus we are currently setting up an OutsideIN youtube channel to get up all funny videos from the Project ‘Shop’ so far and playlists of the research we’ve been laughing at!

SO! the party is going ahead.  I think it’s under control. This is going to a hectic week as we have to clear Patrick’s house, deck it out in cardboard, build a cardboard fort village and set up music and lights and we have 4 days to do it in, starting tomorrow. MEANWHILE gotta be arranging Stitch! stuff for tomorrow at 5pm…. including Mooshie Taboo stuff and some kind of amazing work shop which hasn’t been organised at all yet.

We need to do a booze run, and fix up some kind of health and safety for the party…

So far 98 people confirmed, 101 maybe and 600 and something not yet replied..it couldget vvery hectic!

At the moment wrestling with the idea of tellign neighbors/landlord that we’re throwing a fundrasier party …..do we don’t we?!

I NEED EVERYONE’S HELP!!

we need to establish what our ‘roles’ will be at the party – bouncers, people in charge or merch, boooze, keeping all the cash safe, damage control, fire watch etc.

yep. it’s starting to sound boring but i really need everyone to give me a hand as the responsibility of this has been casually dumped on my head and this week i was meant to be getting on top of printing and designing products, figuring out a screen rotation plan and DOING shop. Oh and figuring out what i’m going to do my essay on, and then actually beginning the research, and then writing the essay. And not eating wheat or dairy at all. haha x

UPDATE: Clare has found ‘a sick russian chick’ to DJ as well. still waiting for Shark Bait and co to confirm

hello all

just been typing up the names and email addresses of the people who came to the screen printing workshop the other day and sent them an email to say thank you and to give them details of the fund-raising events.

I just wanted to say to everyone that from now on its very important when someone gives time to the project we have their name and email..

the name so it can go on the credits wall of ‘Shop’

the email so we can invite them to the thing they helped make… plus future workshops, as we need to get some hard-working loyal members of Project ‘Shop’ volunteers.

this is how I see it … somewhere towards the front of the shop space on a wall or stand will be something like this…

what do you think?

fredx

oh and need to get facebook events set up pronto… the party and for stitch

hey all

as you all know we are going to Stitch on Wednesday 17th to sell beautiful Mooshie Taboo T-shirts and bags.. and maybe even prints to raise money for Project ‘Shop’ but as well as this we are trying to get people engage in the fun of Project ‘Shop’ buy making there own products…

for this we all need to do some collecting… the basic plan is get cartons and small boxes spray them white and give people a marker pen… as well as this we will have paper nets printed out… its just about the fun of it…. best design of the night gets at Free drink! I’ll pay for the drink but need to use project money for spray paint and pens, that ok?

we can have the product design brief as well for if people really want to get involved need to do a bit of work for this… and the mailing list sheet and photos of Mini ‘Shop’!

so as Ellie, Ellie and Patrick are doing the T-shirt side more I think it should be down to Jack, Martin and I to get the workshop all set up…

that good?

I think be good to have say 20-30 packages…

what you think?

START COLLECTING!

Today for me has been mostly about the Hide colloboration project with architecture- which has the potential to be pretty exciting. Although I did check my emails: have had an email back from Celia (Stitch) who has given cardboard searching tips and an email back from Hannah Ford (House of Trash) who has suggested Creative Cabins in Poole as a resource.

Was thinking I could do the Hew Locke work on 19th Feb but just realised it’s the day before the house party-am quite dissapointed :(

Need to chat to Mike about my involvement in the project.

Today I had my new unit introduction: “articulating time and space”, the artists’ Julia showed us were pretty inspriational so I’m really looking forward to getting into the research. But the tutors were bang on with the feedback I got today with suggesting I get making as soon as I can into the project. OutsideIN wise- I need to find a way of fitting ’shop’ into my uni requirements, I will mull it over…

Fred and I met up with Clare Chapman (arts and events) today, she was really helpful, it’s really useful having someone onboard who has arts and events expertise- it’s all about course collaboration! Using all of our knowledge and bringing it together. In the meeting we covered the ’shop’ budget, and the cardboard house party; budget, DJ’s, sound systems, and sourcing cardboard. She suggested we contacted Celia from Stitch, who she reckons sources lots of recycled cardboard. So I’ve contacted her via Facebook. She also suggested we contact Hannah Ford, who put on House of trash last year in a disused shop, she could have some helpful pointers on health and safety and logistics of using that kind of space. So i have emailed her.

Hopefully this week we might hear something back from BBC Radio Solent, if not I reckon we should give them a call and see what’s going on. I also think it’s pretty important we get make sure we are setting up the presentations for the other departments so we can get people with other skills onboard with the project. Oo! and Vicky Wareham mentioned Matt Kay as one of our possible contacts- cardboard artist wise? we must chase that up.

Have also added the Stitch and Beat Redemption details (the bits we know about) to the calendar.

Writing all that makes me feel like I’ve had a productive day!

But I must water the plants they don’t look so happy- sorry Ellie!

Which is lovely jubbly for our pocket. However, still waiting on Clare Chapman from arts and events to get back to us with help with the Carboard House Party and details on tickets, alcohol pricing and selling… will keep you updated

This week I hope to:

  • have the party budget and details to a fine T
  • design the tickets (and maybe print them?)
  • Write my profile for the website (why am I dreading it?)
  • Bug Martin about Vis Com
  • Design and build a model structure for the Elton fine art/architecture colloboration project
  • Blog about all the research I’ve been doing

Until then… x (elzie)

my banana is mainly made of bruise.

We need to build a communal space like this : and to also maybe beat this guy on having the biggest treehouse in the world. BUT! only if we really need the space. otherwise it will be kinda wasteful.

Today i am at home* designing tshirts. serious business.

AND! today the canvas bags arrived. I only ordered them on Tuesday or something. amazing.

Yesterday i ordered the tshirts.

Ladies:

Mens:

XL 10

lovely!!

Today i also need to find out how much it is to run a stall at Beat Redemption. I think we’re in for Stitch : )

*it’s way too difficult to work at uni when designing. No internet in the studios means no design reference, new fonts or research. Also, i find it easier to design on my own, and to get feedback after, rather than faltering on every aspect as i’m trying to gain approval for every part, if i work with other people around. I need a scanner that works all the time with my mac, etc etc etc.

I’m not trying to split away from the group, i just have a terrifyingly pressure-filled deadline of TUESDAY for 4-6 tshirt designs and i will be running on 30%capacity at uni, The end

HIDE AND SEEK... can't find you!

Hi all

Ellie KP and I were search for us on google today and it’s not good… You Can’t Find Us!

I know we are new to this and there’s lots to learn… and some of us aren’t wanting to become online media whores but we all want our audience, whoever they maybe, to be able to find us when they go looking… so we need to look in to ways of improving our ‘Googability’  and ‘Web Presence’… specifically for phrases like ‘project shop’, ‘outsidein collective’ and our names.

All of this bring me to our online manager… Ashley… he (you) is coming to bournemouth this thursday and will be focusing on all thing about the online world of us and Project ‘Shop’.

MAIN TOPIC will be the new website… its design, look and function… and most importantly content… much to do not much time to do it!

other topics to discuss include Fund-raising events such as stalls at Beat Redemption and Stitch and the very exciting cardboard house party!

The biggest news of today is The Mighty Tshirt Endeavor. Which is even larger than it sounds.

So we’re looking to sell tshirts to make money for shop. This means initially putting in a large amount of money for an even bigger return. which = pressure for my designs to sell. So …here we go.

For 60 tees, in 6 different sizes it will cost £139.something, so each tshirt will cost £2.316666666forever

And if we sell them for £10 we can make £460 profit for shop.

-That’s if we sell 60 tees before it happens. But! It will mean making a profit for the collective to use in the future.

and maybe [we] should think about canvas bag[s]

=

http://shop.thecleverbaggers.co.uk/store/pc/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=82&idproduct=878

£29.30 for 30 bags. including p&p

I have begun putting my sketches into Illustrator and tracing them to make vector quality designs. So far, they don’t look very good, but i’m working on them. Aiming to have 6 different designs in total, to go onto screens to be printed using the method of silkscreening.

And have a large number of tshirts printed and ready to sell before the 13th of Feb…!

-We plan to sell them at Beat Redemption and Stitch at 60 Million Postcards.

checking out the competition: http://sharkbait.bigcartel.com/

Also um um um…

I’m going to try to finish the products i previously mentioned, by putting barcodes onto them and getting them spell checked. exciting.

Patrick’s gunna be working on a ‘posh’ net for Instant Fame. It might be a pentagon shape or something sexy.

That’s all for now

x ellie
